    Herstory:

After allowing an emotionally abusive relationship in my early twenties, as part of which I chose to have two terminations, I experienced a depth of emotional trauma that resulted in the triggering of the autoimmune condition Ankylosing Spondilitis – an arthritis that characteristically effects the sacroiliac joints and spine.

After many years of misdiagnosis, and then limited options for management, I had the awakening that my condition was aggravated, if not caused, by my retroverted uterus creating pressure and anomalies in structures through my sacral area.

For many years I have tried different therapies to correct this, yet nothing truly addressed the problem in a deep enough way that would allow any physical changes to ‘stick’.

Upon finding Heather and her deeply important work, I feel I have finally found the ‘end’ to this story. Heather’s work addresses the emotional as well as physical scarring left from years of inflammation, and gives me a light at the end of this journey.

Coupling Heather’s gentle yet profoundly moving approach with Acupuncture and the other healing modalities I employ has seen wonderful shifts in the way I approach each client, and the deeply satisfying results we are achieving in the clinic.

Freeing and balancing the uterus and pelvis has added a profound depth to the work that I do, and it thrills me to see people hopping off the table feeling freer and more flowing than they have in years.

Structure determines function, and it is my sincere wish that I can help others find the path to healing of body, mind and soul as I have myself – through deep exploration and acceptance of the past, nourishing the body and mind with the right ingredients, and deeply moving body work to help undo the ‘life’ lived.

Hi, and welcome to my story, my life and my work!

I’m Vanessa and often known as Nessa, I was conceived on Bruny Island in Tasmania, the first child of my parents Heather and Charles, who went on to have another three children.  We grew up in an old convict built hotel on ¾ acre in Longford, Tasmania, with a paddock next door for chooks, horses, goats and some blackberry bushes!  Mum and Dad grew some of our vegies and we had an apple orchard, so I grew up in a fairly holistic way.  When I was 13 my youngest sister was diagnosed (after much trauma) as being allergic to the 20th Century.  We had to strip our house of 24 rooms of all synthetics, perfumes etc.  What a shock to teenagers!

By the time I reached year 11 I started to discover a few complications with my own health.  I began to notice, as the stress levels went up at school, that I got migraines from milk, eggs, sugar, yeast and wheat for starters.  I soon realised that if I felt a symptom in my physical body that I needed to notice what had been happening in the hour or so beforehand, and could usually diagnose the culprit.  I made my way through years 11 and 12 plus 4 years at University being incredibly careful, I could not sit next to anyone with perfume or strong deodorant in lectures or I would start sneezing! After Uni, the stresses eased and I went overseas travelling, sensitivities were less of an issue.

I decided to follow my passion for outdoor adventures rather than teaching in classrooms and ended up coming back from Europe to work at Cradle Mountain Lodge in Tasmania, where I spent six years as Manager of Guest/Outdoor and Conference Activities.  I loved this work with a passion, I could work with people outdoors and was generally safe from toxic exposure.  Working outdoors in a pristine environment suited me perfectly, I walked kilometres each day, breathing clear mountain air and drinking fresh mountain water.  I left this work in 1994 due to pregnancy and intense morning sickness.   I was sad to leave but could not see myself lugging a baby up and down mountains, abseiling and canoeing!

I had been diagnosed with hearing issues as a teen but did not want hearing aids so I ignored it.  This was a progressive nerve deafness, diagnosed finally when I was 21.  I signed up for a hearing aid at 21 to hear the birds again, then at 40 had a Cochlear Implant so that I could hear small children’s voices again.  This has changed my life incredibly and I now hear birds I haven’t heard since childhood.

Life served me some interesting experiences, the first pregnancy ended in a Blighted Ovum and I happily went off teaching Outdoor Ed Camps in the Mountains then on to Guiding Expeditions of Bushwalking Rafting and Cycling until my second pregnancy slowed me down!

I was determined to give my baby a Toxic Free Pregnancy, I did everything possible to keep to natural products and even lined up for my own sheets, towels etc to go in to the hospital for the birth!  There were complications which led me on a merry journey, which really has continued from the birth of my son Douglas on 29th April 1997 until present.  It has been the constant search for answers to a string of complications and issues that has led me on a path of healing my body one step at a time, constantly looking  for teachers or healers that may understand or connect with the type of complications I had encountered and help answer my questions.  I have been fortunate that there have been opportunities to follow this natural train of healing and have experienced much in the way of healing modalities, many of which I have taken courses in order to understand better.

The curiosity about abdominal massage called to me from the very first Heartworks Lomi Lomi course in 2006, when a morning of belly dancing and abdominal work sent me to the bathrooms to empty the contents of my stomach four times in a couple of hours. This was the beginning of unlocking the layers of stuff that were stopping my body from functioning properly.

From then to now (2020), it has been 14 years of one thing after another, and only last weekend on our course did I finally realise that there was a car accident at 18 years of age which most likely caused the torsion injury that affected my uterus and subsequently bladder to the point of severe complications.  Wow, the depths of this work!

So Heather Bruce walked into my life part way through the journey of healing the pelvic trauma, and it has been through her work that I have fully come to understand the pathway to healing the body the Gentling Way, and using these methods to heal the body one step at a time, often in intensives.  I have travelled to New Zealand, Brisbane and Melbourne to catch up with Heather as she has presented courses and have been fortunate enough to be able to assist with some of those courses and support others in learning  this work as well.  It truly is incredible to see clients come in and find relief from issues that have prevailed for years, with no one able to help until now.

I live in the Grampians, Victoria, with a husband, adult son and two fun little Griffons (dogs).  My eldest son lives in Ballarat and my family live in Tasmania, which is my souls’ home!  I have an Island property on Bruny Island, Southern Tasmania where I love to spend time when I am able.  Our property in the Grampians is home to a Camping Ground which was set up by my father in law in the late 1980’s with us taking over in 2012.  We have bushland, big old trees, mountain views, wetlands and are fortunate enough to have a beautiful lake right outside our house.  My studio is tucked away in the Campground and I see clients by appointment for massages, steaming sessions and healing intensives as well as holding Qigong by the Lake and Sound Spas with my Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls plus occasional workshops.

During the Covid lockdown of 2020 I was fortunate enough to join a group of rather incredible individuals learning some new skills under the banner of ‘Warriors of Love’ Apprenticeship and through the subsequent  ‘Ravishing Results’ program I have birthed my Innerji  Soap officially (after three years of playing around with soap experiments to see if I could make safe soap for my family).  I have been selling pure soap made from both plant and tallow based recipes, infused with natural plant matter from organic and known sources.  I have been getting great feedback from those who are purchasing the soap, and really am feeling that it is achieving the goal of ‘improving peoples lives’ through feeding their skin with only the best ingredients.

The soap is available by mail order as well as on site sales, and I enjoy making  dedicated batches of soap for specific purposes.  It is at those times that I feel the vibrational energy of my work, my ancestors,  my Mum, who grew up assisting her chemist Dad, and later branched into healing with herbs, and my Indigenous ancestors, with whom I feel a strong connection through the land.

I have deep respect for the Earth and for the people who share this planet, I try to use earth friendly products as much as possible and avoid perfumes or chemical products.

I welcome questions, enquiries and look forward to supporting you on your healing journey.

    My Story

After significant birth trauma with my first, I was naturally drawn to supporting women through pregnancy and birth.

When my eldest was about 6 months old we moved from Melbourne up to Brisbane.

During this time I stumbled upon Heather and her work and was lucky enough to shadow and learn from Heather for over a year in her Brisbane clinic.

This time strongly influenced the way I work- with many techniques still being used on the majority of my patients (everyone loves a good sacral wake up and moxa fan!!).

It also had me thinking about how I work in an entirely new and exciting way.

Nearly 11 years later I came back in contact with Heather and after hearing about the extensive studies she has completed with a number of influential abdominal massage healers I wanted to learn more!

One of the most significant things I take away from this work is that gentle is the way forward.

There is no point trying to force the body to do something it isn’t ready to.

By offering time, space, safety, and support the body is able to gently unravel and go back to how it is meant to be.

What attracts me to this work?

What I love most about this work is that every single patient is different.

Every person who walks through my door recieves a unique treatment tailored specifically to them.

I love how gentle, subtle, yet amazingly profound this work is.

I love continuously growing as a practitioner, learning new techniques and tools to assist my patients, as well as building on my own knowledge base.

I can’t ever see myself getting bored of this amazing work!

    Life Experiences

Prior to becoming passionate about understanding my own body, health and healing I studied business and finance and worked in a corporate environment for many years both in Australia and overseas in the Czech Republic. After over ten years working in this environment, I gradually lost my passion for finance, became discouraged, and had that feeling that there was something else out there for me.

Around this time, my wife after years of following doctor’s recommendations and still being unable to resolve her allergies and chronic acne, took responsibility for her own health, researched and implemented different natural alternatives. This meant that my diet changed which I initially resisted. We often jokingly recall me commenting on my wife eating goji berries as bird food. However, within six weeks her allergies and acne disappeared and I noticed incredible changes in my own body. Humble pie can taste sweet.

Since that time (2014) my life moved in a different direction as I felt compelled to spend the large majority of my spare time exploring and researching how this amazing body of ours works. I am convinced that the body is capable of healing itself where there is awareness, understanding and the provision of necessary inputs and seek to apply this principle when formulating a treatment.

About a year into my learning journey, my mum fell ill with cancer and using the base of knowledge available to me at that time, supported and assisted my mum through her journey as best I could and witnessed such a profound difference.

In pursuit of learning in a more structured environment I initially commenced the study of an Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy, which focused on the application of Western Herbal medicine. However one year into this study I was inspired by the acupuncture model of medicine and broad depth of application to address not only the physical but the mental, emotional and metaphysical aspects of our being. I am currently studying acupuncture.

I have been blessed with many wonderful teachers whom have freely shared with me their passion and expertise. Having attended a vast number of different workshops varying from auricular acupuncture to initiating neurological tremors in the body to release trauma stored in our physical structure, it amazes me at how simple or how incredibly complicated we can make medicine and healing with various approaches and protocols. For me, effective healing is not just one thing or modality, it is a collective of wisdom applied to the unique individual.

The Gentling Way approach combines a simple and sensible approach, which allows healing through recognition of our blockages, taking out what is not meant to be there and nourishing the body thus allowing the body to restore itself to health (homeostasis). It is not focused on the name of the disease state, but rather that the disease state is a reflection that we are not in a state of health and initiates the movement towards a state of health through understanding.

Why I follow the Gentling Way

Healing is made to appear so complex. How much of this do I take, when do I take it, but someone else said, don’t do that, it is not going to work!  In my pursuit for finding the “right answer”, the “cure all”, I continually found myself applying intellectual concepts, which had limited results. Frustrated by this I searched for a model, which considered broader aspects than just a specific measurable indicator or standard approach for a particular disease.

I then stumbled across the Gentling Way, which was profoundly what I was searching for and continually reminds me that healing is unique to the individual and can be so simple.

Take out what is not meant to be there, understand the physical blockages we create in our bodies and provide the conditions necessary for the body to thrive. Healing is just like gardening. The gardener doesn’t grow anything, only creates the conditions for growth to take place.

For me, the Gentling Way merges all of the basis tenants and concepts I have learnt from my previous studies and practical experience, and combines them into an instantly applicable framework with directly observed results. Not focusing on disease, but the unfavorable conditions preventing a return to health.

Living the Gentling Way with my wife and taking responsibility for our own health, we have seen remarkable changes at both a biological and relationship level. It is as though sub-conscious barriers that separated us are being eroded and deepening our relationship. I am a believer of what works and I am passionate to share this knowledge to assist others with their healing journey.

    My passion

Having a consistent and devoted passion for something, that feeling of waking up and having a magnetic attraction for continuing from where you left off the previous day, is a profound gift. My passion is to learn, experience and increase my vitality while at the same time assisting and educating others to do the same for themselves.

      My Story

What really was happening to get me to do this.

After many years of my own abdominal pain I was constantly searching for someone who would work on my belly.

This was difficult to find and then I was referred to Heather.

      My life changed.

Not only did I get relief from her body work but she also acted as a significant mentor as the new practitioner I was.

She initially guided me to the Arvigo techiques of Maya Abdominal Therapy and then onto her own specific teachings of the Gentling Way in which will be life long learning for me.

What attracts you to this work?

As I was originally a client of Heathers I have experienced myself receiving the healing this work can offer.

It is so nurturing and you feel completely held and supported whilst the body is allowed to heal.

I remember my first experience of the Steaming and how Heather created the perfect blend of herbs for me and allowed me to sit and steam overlooking her beautiful garden.

I was safe and I was able to just be me.

It is a soothing experience and very calming.

I find the steaming has a releasing effect.
Releasing of tension that’s stored in the body.

I love that this work is all about the individual.
It’s about holding space, using many different tools to assist the patient.
It’s gentle and nurturing and there is time in the sessions to allow people to unravel.

      My story

After completing my Arts degree with a major in psychology, I started post graduate studies, however it dawned on me that the medical framework in which I was studying did not sit well for me. I started searching for a healing modality that resonated with me. That was Chinese medicine where the body, emotions and spirit were one and cannot be separated into parts. That is when I started studying Shiatsu, Chinese medicine, meditation and 5 element qi gung. During this time I embarked on a deep healing and spiritual journey as a Buddhist practitioner. This journey really helped me understand how our thoughts and emotions have a profound effect on our physical health.

In my 30’s I started studying acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

My children were born with an emergency C-section about a year after graduating. I am a mother to twin boys who are now nine years old.

I lived in Bali for a number of years, working at Yayasan Bumi Sehat, a natural birthing centre.
We had a community acupuncture and herbal clinic there and I was giving healthcare to newborn, children, fertility couples, pregnant women and all the way through to palliative care. It was a deep learning curve and I was often researching how to help patients as I sometimes felt out of my depth. It was sink or swim.

I remember when I was asked to run the paediatric clinic as all the other practitioners were away.
My response was I have only learned it in theory, I have no practical experience and I was told – well now is the time to gain experience!

My time in Bali was an enriching experience . My children came to the clinic and created lots of mischief running around and charming the midwives, nurses and other staff.

Since returning to Australia to live, again I have been pushed out of my comfort zone yet again and have now set up a clinic in Redcliffe, north of Brisbane.

Why I became a Gentling Way Practitioner

I was interested in learning Mayan abdominal massage, and I had a couple of treatments with Heather which I loved. She has woven into her treatments, healing techniques from different traditional societies as well as acupuncture and lymphatic drainage. This coupled with Mayan abdominal massage which readjusts the ligaments of the uterus and adhesion breaking helped with my C-section scar and I instantly felt taller and freer. They were simple techniques that can have profound effect on the quality of peoples lives.

One of the things I really love about the Gentling Way is that the responsibility to heal is in your hands, not the practitioner. Not only do you receive treatment to correct the imbalances that is causing suffering, you also learn self care techniques that you take home and continue the healing/wellness journey in your own home.

      Her Story

I am the eldest daughter, I am a mother, a grandmother and a lover.

Life can sometimes lead you on some very interesting paths or journeys and mine certainly hasn’t been the straightforward walk to the park.  I started my working career as an admin assistant and worked both here and overseas.  I returned to Australia pregnant and a single mum which began my journey into parenting and partnering – this was not an easy journey.  I had four beautiful children and a dysfunctional marriage and during this time I was a stay at home mum.

My fourth birth was such an amazing and ecstatic experience that led me into my journey to become a midwife via nursing.  I love being a midwife, being present to witness a woman coming into her power, the love and nurturing she receives to bring her baby earthside is something I will always cherish.  I have been a midwife now for 16+ years and a home birth midwife for 11+ years.

While being present, holding space and sharing in all these birth experiences I started to see a link between birth and sexuality sent me down the path of Yoni Mapping Therapy and Ecstatic birth which I feel has greatly improved my understanding and presence during birth.

I continue as a home birth midwife, together with my other offerings and currently live off grid in the Wide Bay Region of Qld with my lover and my dog growing vegies and learning, growing and sharing my wise woman wisdom.

Why I became a Gentling Way Practitioner

I first became aware of Heather’s work through my midwifery clients who would talk about this amazing wise woman who helped with hyperemesis, pelvic discomfort, low lying placenta’s, fertility etc.  I was invited to attend her teaching an Arvigo Self Care course which then led to her Gentling Way Reconnecting Bao Mai and the Living Ligaments I workshops plus the online offerings as we became a bonded group, whilst recently shut into this new reality.

During these trainings I started to see the subtle changes to my body and my life.  But the biggest gift I received through this training was the changes that I started to see in my clients.  By introducing just a few of Heather’s foundational moves to these birthing women I seen easier births, less tearing, improved breastfeeding and healthy babies.  With my Yoni Mapping clients I started to see their pelvis’s loosen and gain increased sensation even without any internal work.

       My story

I love people… my nature is on the quiet side which means I am more comfortable connecting one-on-one than in a crowd, but this has made me skilled at observing people; their body language, the way they hold themselves, facial expressions and changes…..

Born and raised on a cane farm in FNQ at the foot of a mountain, I was blessed to be raised in a small country town and spent a great deal of my childhood outside in the fresh air and hot sun, and we grew a great deal of our vegies too. Unfortunately like most farming back then there was a fair amount of poisons, fungicides and sprays used and at times the environment was less than ideal.

Various factors led to the diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis at a young age and there began the first of my healing journeys. Made more noticeable by my dancing, I fully experienced inflammation’s effect on the body and state of mind. Blessed with a mother that wouldn’t quit, she believed something could be done for my health, that diet may be involved and set about finding a solution. Thus my first naturopath. And with the remission of the UC, my intrigue for the body and all things health was born.

After studying my Adv Dip’s alongside my husband’s various businesses, we started a fitness business together. Life was busy and my studies slipped… but the experience we gained through that time was invaluable to how I work now – we learnt how peoples personalities work and how to treat within the framework that suited them best, and we created a beautiful safe space that our clients felt at home in which in turn helped to create an incredible and close community  – it was through this time that I learnt ‘it takes a tribe’ – the business embodied it.

Through the fitness industry, and with the strains of my husband’s health issues, I nearly gave up building a business as a naturopath. I felt that what it had become for me fell short of what I wanted I and expected it to be…. like only 1 leg of a 3-legged stool. It felt like a clinical recipe/ protocol. And maybe I was not working with the right clients….

Once I found Heather’s Gentling Way, I knew this work was the light I was looking for. A deeper understanding of the environment, what goes into the body, what happens in the body energetically as a result of these things, and then how to set up the body as its blueprint had intended, and how to move though the physical these problem areas that had arisen through the course of that individuals life in order to bring back to that intended blueprint. I had come home. I could finally embody and provide the work through my hands and knowledge that my heart had always wanted to give to others.

      I do this work because I can’t not….
